How to improve your first touch

A bad first touch does not cost you the ball immediately. It costs you time, and time is what turns a comfortable pass into a rushed one. If your touch stops the ball dead under your feet, you have given the defender the half second they needed. The fix is not talent. It is deciding where the ball is going before it reaches you, and having done the repetitions to put it there.

The wall drill

Stand five metres from a wall. Pass into it, receive with the inside of the foot, and push the ball one metre into space rather than trapping it under you.

Fifty repetitions with each foot. The distance matters: one metre is far enough to be running onto the ball, close enough to keep it. You are training the touch to travel, not to stop.

  • Pass into a wall from 5m
  • Receive with the inside
  • Push it 1m into space, do not trap it
  • 50 reps each foot

The aerial drill

Throw the ball up and kill it with the thigh. Then do the same with the chest. Thirty of each, both sides.

The standard to hold yourself to is that the ball is dead on the first contact and sitting where you can play it. If it bounces away and you need a second touch to recover, that repetition did not count.

  • Throw it up, kill it with the thigh
  • Then the chest
  • 30 of each, both sides
  • Dead on the first contact

The four habits ruining your touch

Almost every bad first touch comes from one of four things, and they are all fixable without any extra athleticism.

  • Stopping the ball dead under your feet instead of into space
  • Taking the touch toward the defender rather than away
  • Using only your strong foot, which telegraphs where the ball goes
  • Looking down as it arrives, so you have no idea what is around you

Where it actually goes wrong

The last habit is the one that matters most, and it is not really a first touch problem at all. If you look down as the ball travels, you are deciding where to put it after it arrives, which is already too late.

Look before it gets to you and the touch takes care of itself.
