How to shoot with power

Short answer

To shoot with power without losing accuracy, plant your standing foot next to the ball pointing at your target, lock your ankle and strike the middle of the ball with your laces, keep your head and chest over the ball, pick your corner before you strike, and follow through so you land on your kicking foot. Leaning back is the most common reason shots go over the bar.

Power comes from technique, not from swinging harder. Players who try to hit it harder usually lean back and miss.

The five keys

Practise each one on its own before putting them together.

  • Plant foot beside the ball, toes at the target
  • Laces through the middle, ankle locked
  • Head and chest over the ball
  • Pick a corner first
  • Follow through and land on your kicking foot

Shooting drill

Take 20 shots, calling your corner before each one. Count how many hit the target. Repeat weekly and watch the number climb.

Common questions

Why do my shots always go over the bar?

You are leaning back at contact or striking the bottom of the ball. Keep your head and chest over the ball and strike through its middle.
