A training plan for central midfielders

Short answer

Central midfielders should train scanning before every touch, receiving on the half-turn to play forward, one and two touch passing with both feet, long passing range, and aerobic fitness for box-to-box running. The best midfielders know their next pass before the ball arrives.

Midfield is where the game is decided by the player who has the most time on the ball. Time comes from scanning and body shape, not speed.

Scanning and receiving

Check over each shoulder before the ball arrives, then receive across your body so you can play forward. Practise against a wall: pass, check your shoulder, receive with your back foot, turn.

  • 100 wall passes with a shoulder check every time
  • Receive on the back foot and turn: 3 x 15

Passing range

Train short combinations and 30 to 40 metre switches with both feet. Strike through the middle of the ball for driven passes.

Fitness

Midfielders cover the most ground. Add one interval run a week, for example 6 x 3 minutes hard with 2 minutes easy.

Common questions

How do I become a better midfielder?

Scan before you receive, open your body to play forward, pass with both feet, and build the fitness to keep doing it for 90 minutes. Baller AI builds a midfield-specific plan around these.

Get this built into your week

Baller AI turns drills like these into a training plan around your position and the days you can actually train.
