A training plan for strikers

Short answer

Strikers should train finishing with both feet (one-touch, after a dribble, and volleys), movement to lose a defender in the box, back-to-goal hold-up play and turning, and acceleration over short distances. Take 50 to 100 shots a week with a target for each one, and always pick your corner before you strike.

Strikers are judged on goals, but goals come from three skills: getting into the right space, a clean first touch, and a finish that does not need a second chance.

Finishing

Do not just shoot. Every shot needs a target and a technique. Strike through the middle of the ball with your laces, head over the ball, and land on your kicking foot.

  • One-touch finishes from a rebound: 20 each foot
  • Dribble and shoot low corners: 20
  • Volleys from a self-feed: 20

Movement and hold-up play

Practise the double movement: step towards the defender, then spin away into space. With your back to goal, receive on the half-turn and protect the ball with your arm and body.

Speed in the box

Strikers rarely sprint more than 15 metres. Train 5 and 10 metre starts with full rest.

Common questions

How can I improve my finishing in soccer?

Take fewer, better shots: pick a corner first, strike the middle of the ball with your laces, keep your head over it, and practise with both feet. Track your accuracy so you can see improvement.
